Trimming & Pruning

Measure Twice, Cut Once

Pruning is critical work. With each limb cut, each branch removed, your tree is left with an imprint for the remainder of its life. That’s why it’s so important to work with an arborist who is experienced and who understands how a tree will be impacted by the trimming in the long term.

Improper pruning can spread pathogens and leave a tree prone to disease. Each cut in the wood is an injury to the tree and, until it has healed properly, leaves an open wound. With proper pruning techniques, your tree will heal quickly so it can continue to provide your property with both beauty and shade for generations.

When a tree is trimmed, less is more. This is because the tree will send out new growth in response to the trimming. We are careful to remove just the right amount, aiming for longstanding results. Our skilled arborists take care with each individual tree to predict the way the tree will respond during the healing process and into the future.

When to Prune Your Trees

Choosing the right time to have a tree pruned is important because it significantly impacts the tree’s health. When to prune depends on the desired outcome. Here are some guidelines.

A tree’s first trimming should take place within the first 2 to 5 years. Afterward, most types of trees benefit from trimming every 3 to 5 years. Pine and fir trees are generally trimmed every 5 to 7 years. Ornamental trees are commonly trimmed yearly, every two years, or in some cases twice per year, according to the tastes of the owner. If trees are close to, or overhang a structure, they may need to be trimmed more regularly.
