When a Tree Falls on a Neighbor’s Property

If your neighbor’s tree has fallen on your property, it will be your responsibility to handle the tree removal service. If your tree has fallen on their property, it’s now their responsibility to take care of the removal.

It’s not uncommon for neighbors to disagree with each other over the trees on their property. A good rule of thumb is to be a good neighbor, communicate, and cooperate & hopefully they will do the same.

When a Tree Falls in the Road

When a tree falls in the road or on a sidewalk near your property, the first this you should do is rope off or block the area. This will tell cars and walking traffic that they’ll need to detour away from the tree.

Depending on the road where the tree has fallen, it’s the responsibility of the local city, county, or state management to take care of the tree removal. Most main roadways are state roads and smaller side roads are often city roads.

When a Tree Falls Near Power Lines

When power lines have been impacted by a fallen tree, the electric company will need to step in to clear things up. It’s very important to let them handle the situation as electrical lines are extremely dangerous. Once the power lines have been handled, the tree can then be removed by a tree service.

Do not get close. Observe the fallen tree from a distance and call your power company right away to alert them.

Who Pays

The good news is that you may not need to pay out of pocket for an emergency tree removal. Depending on the policy, your homeowner’s insurance may cover this type of removal. Trees add to property values, so some policies also cover the replacement of trees that are damaged in a storm.

If your home has been damaged, your insurance or your neighbor’s insurance may cover the property damage.

Who to Contact

First, call a local arborist for emergency tree services. If you’re in our area, find our number at the top of the page and give us a call. It can be helpful to have photos of the fallen tree.

Contact your insurance company to begin the claim process and to learn what your policy covers. Take note of claim number, insurance agent’s name, and their phone number in case you need to follow up.

If the tree has fallen in the road, call the city, county, or state in charge of maintaining the road.

If electrical wires are involved, call the power company.

What Our Clients Have To Say

“Jon and his crew did a great job removing a HUGE cottonwood from our backyard after it was damaged in a windstorm. His price was well below the other bids we received, and they managed to get it down and hauled away the same day. He worked with us to make sure the crane didn’t damage our lawn or sprinklers, and did a great job cleaning up all the debris. I’ve read other great reviews about Arbor+, and they fully deserve the stellar reputation.” – Sam P.

“Very pleased with the crew. I had some nasty damage high in an elm tree after a snow storm. Impossible for me to clear the damaged limbs. They worked hard, smart and safe. Left the yard and roof clean. Their charge was very reasonable considering the work. I will definitely use them again.”
– Ken V.

“We had Arbor come and do a tree clean up from a tree from our neighbor’s property that fell in our backyard. They did a great job. Were very professional. Highly recommend them.” – Beth J.
